Let me tell you something—this body is TIRED. I know y’all feel me. Between work, kids, side hustles, and trying to “live our best lives,” we’re out here running on fumes like a 2001 Honda Civic with the check engine light on.

• Because duh, we’re not machines. Stress got us out here looking like zombies.

• Y’all ever lay down for a nap and realize you’ve been living in a constant state of exhaustion? Yeah, me too.

• Sleep ain’t just for beauty; it’s for survival. Your body is waving a white flag saying, “Cuz, PLEASE!”

How to Get It:

• Set boundaries. Tell people, “Look, I’m clocked out. Don’t ask me for NOTHING.” And mean it!

Doing my own self reflection was crucial. But as I rewatched these videos (because you know I had to), I realized they’re more than just a laugh. They’re a mirror—okay, a hilarious, over-the-top mirror—that reflects something deeper: the times we’ve been suspect in our own lives. I know what you’re gonna say, “here you go getting all deep”. First, if you didn’t know, Black women have been doing a lot for a long time. We’re the ones on the front lines when it comes to social justice, women’s rights, and just about every movement that involves moving this world forward. We’re like that friend who always volunteers to bring the drinks, snacks, and drive everyone to the event. (And then somehow we’re still the last ones to get thanked at the end, if we’re thanked at all.) This is a safe space right??

We love the community, but we’re also tired. Burned out. Exhausted. And, let’s be real—we just want to take a nap.

The Burden of Being “The Strong Ones”

Y’all know that old stereotype of the “strong Black woman”? It’s like we’re expected to be the Energizer Bunny for every cause under the sun. From civil rights to climate change to “let’s make sure Karen doesn’t say that word,” 👀 Black women are always on deck. But guess what? Sometimes, even the MVP needs a break. There’s a reason all of us are out here saying, “Protect Black women” like it’s a mantra. We need to protect ourselves, too.

Why We’re Tapping Out (Sort Of)

Now, before anyone says, “Oh, so Black women are just done?” let’s be clear: we’re not disappearing or ignoring the issues. We’re just saying, “We’ve carried this torch for long enough. Now it’s your turn.” Imagine playing double-dutch and just waiting for the other folks to finally jump in! We’re pausing so others can pick up the slack. Cough white women cough. 👋🏾

Calling on Our Extended Family: Time to Show Up!

This part is for our dear white friends, our allies, our “extended family.” We love y’all (well some of yall 🌚), but we need to see more of you stepping into these roles, doing the work, and speaking up in spaces where Black voices alone just aren’t enough. We need y’all to take on some of the load and have those tough conversations that we’ve been having for years. If we can speak up and organize, y’all can step in and speak up, too. And don’t worry—you don’t need to carry it all, but we could use the help.

But Wait—How Do We Pass the Torch?

Now I know, I know. Some of our white family members are like, “But HOW, though?” The thing is, this isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

1. Use your voice. Speak up when you see injustices. Whether it’s at work, at the PTA meeting, or over Thanksgiving dinner—yes, I said it!—let your voice be heard.

2. Educate each other. Google is free! So is asking each other those “but why” questions instead of waiting on Black women to answer them. Gather your fellow allies and go learn something together.

3. Show up consistently. We’ve been doing this for decades, so a little consistency on your end would be appreciated. Be there for the long haul, not just when it’s trendy.

4. Listen to Black women. We’re not saying step in and take over; we’re saying join us. Don’t just speak for us—speak with us.
